Recently I have been having different versions of the same conversation.
It basically goes like this:
Random person: I really want to Get fitter/ lose weight/ move better/ get bigger and stronger. What do you think I should I do?
Me: It’s pretty simple you just need to, do more stuff that gets your heart rate up/ Do mobility exercises daily/ eat more vegetables and less complex carbs and drink more water/ eat a lot, squat and increase your rep max weights on exercises.
Random person: I know, but is that all.
Me: No its not, but it is the simplest and most effective starting point
Random person: Ok, I suppose I should start doing it then, but….
Most people know what they need to do, you talk to someone about eating healthy, and they have about an 80% idea of what they need to do. Yet they don’t do it. I know this is a gross over simplification of things and people do need coaching and assistance to get things done sometimes. What this is about is people saying I know but then not executing. It happens to everyone, me included. What I do try to do, is have people and checks in place to stop me from doing this.
The truth is…
Knowing = Doing.
Action is the expression of your knowledge. A thought is only useful if it is acted upon. Thinking is easy, execution is hard. I know, I love thinking about things and throwing ideas around, but this has no meaning if there is no execution. Especially now in this age of technology. We have the collective knowledge of the human race in our back pockets. Today you have access to information on any topic. Yes a lot of that information is unfiltered and there’s a lot of bullshit information, but with some research, common sense and critical thinking. You can filter this into useable information. What we have now is too much people saying I know, and not enough people doing. Saying I know is easy, doing is hard! We might need help or guidance to do. Get help is taking action.
We need to change the way we think about knowing.
If you know something you are doing it, period. If you are not doing it then you don’t know it. There is too much passing off information as Knowledge. Knowledge is the application of information. If I know how to get people stronger, then I’m getting myself stronger or I’m getting the people I train stronger. If I know about mobility, then I’m mobile and/ or coaching people and improving their mobility and movement.
Action is key. Knowledge without action is just information and information is cheap. It’s everywhere, look on your phone you can find information on anything. Try it, google string theory… there’s a lot of information, but just because you did that doesn’t mean you now know string theory.
Action is not always physical, it can be discussing, teaching, researching. It is a process that involves the information.
So what does it boil down to…?
If you think you know something do something with it. If you know how to eat healthily and you want to, do something about it don’t just say I know then make some excuses about why you can’t.
If you can’t do it, then get help. Get a coach, ask friends who are doing what you want for help. Read this website. That is why we are here, our goal is to share things that can help you reach your goals and Level up your life.
So pick something, a goal that you want to reach. Get a specific thing to start with and execute. Get shit done!
