Ask yourselves. Why do you waste so much time worrying about things you cannot control. Why do we keep focusing on things that we cannot change or control? I have been struggling with this for some time now. Worrying about all the things that I cannot control. Being selected for a team or being injured. As human beings we quickly lose focus on what we can control by worrying about the things that is out of our control. We lose sight of our own goals and capabilities. We doubt ourselves.
Why do we focus on the uncontrollable?
Every human being strives towards something. We have a goal, something we want to succeed in. When we experience setbacks in the process of reaching our goal we start doubting ourselves. We stop focusing on ourselves and start worrying about elements that we cannot control. Elements such as coaches, exams, bosses or injuries. We worry excessively over things that we cannot control and we let that set our mood or standards. You might say but that is in our nature. You are right in your way of thinking but wrong because behaviour is controllable. It’s a choice. It’s a choice that you make.
What is the implication of worrying about the uncontrollable?
You lose focus on your own goals. You let the uncontrollable in life dictate what your outcome in life is going to be. You let small things stop you from enjoying your life. You doubt your capabilities. Through this you performance suffers.
How do you change your way of thinking?
Start focusing on what you can control. Take action in your life. For example if you are not selected for a team. That is most of the time out of your control. Stop moaning why you did not make the team and start focusing on yourselves. Start being the best you can be. Turn the uncontrollable into a controllable. How? Use it to motivate yourself and grow from that. This sound easy and could be a cliché. Remember life is a process. As soon as you understand, that it is a process and that learning takes place through trial and error. The better off you are. Success has a timeline. For some it comes easy but for others it takes hard work and determination to succeed.
There are many examples in the world of people that kept on going although everything was against them they believed in their capabilities and focus on what they could control and they succeeded. People like Bill Gates, Walt Disney, Steve Jobs etc. They are people that failed, but that did not stop them. In fact that drive them to become even better. They trust the process and focus on what they could control and they succeed.
Control what you can. Use the uncontrollable as motivation and grow.
